Protect Head Start: Arizona’s Children and Workforce Have Everything To Gain

Head Start is more than child care. It is an investment in Arizona’s children, families, workforce and economy. Today, 17,000 Arizona children rely on Head Start for high-quality early learning and critical health, developmental, nutrition, mental health and family supports. The program also helps parents remain in the workforce and pursue education and training, generating an estimated $200 million in economic impact for Arizona. A proposed federal rule would significantly reduce current Head Start Program Performance Standards and give states and local programs greater flexibility over how services are delivered. Weakening national standards could mean larger classroom groups, reduced home-visiting services, less consistent support for children with disabilities and lower teacher qualification requirements—with the largest impact potentially falling on Arizona families who face the greatest barriers.
